Aftercare
- Follow Dentist Instructions: Always adhere to the specific advice your dentist provides for post-treatment care.
- Avoid Eating Until Numbness Wears Off: If you've had an anaesthetic, wait until the numbness subsides to avoid accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.
- Eat Soft Foods: Stick to soft foods like soup, yoghurt, or mashed potatoes for the first 24 hours, especially after procedures like fillings, extractions, or root canals.
- Avoid Hot Drinks and Foods: Heat can increase swelling or dislodge any protective dressing. Opt for cool or room-temperature foods and drinks.
- Rinse Gently with Salt Water: Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (1 tsp of salt in a glass of warm water) after 24 hours to help with healing, particularly after extractions.
- Manage Pain and Swelling:
- Take any prescribed painkillers or over-the-counter options like paracetamol or ibuprofen as advised.
- Use an ice pack to reduce swelling for 10-15 minutes at a time.
- Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 24-48 hours, as they can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
- Brush Teeth Carefully: Continue brushing your teeth but be gentle around the treated area to avoid irritation.
- Avoid Strenuous Activity: Take it easy for the first day after treatment. Overexertion can cause bleeding or discomfort.
- Monitor for Complications: Watch for signs of infection or unusual pain, such as:
- Persistent bleeding
- Severe swelling or pus
- Fever or a bad taste in the mouth
- Keep Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any follow-up appointments to ensure healing is progressing as expected.
